Read this article from the National Wildlife Federation who have worked for decades with northern tribes to see this happen: Bison Homecoming – National Wildlife Federation. Bison are a keystone species for our largest North American biome, the Grasslands of the Great Plains. Restoration of a significant portion of the North American continent is not possible without herds of ungulates in balance with their predators, and with their grassland home. The reintroduction of Bison, Elk and Antelope, along with their predators, (the Wolf and Grizzly Bear, among others), to the short-grass and mixed-grass prairies of the High Plains and Mid-West is key to any native grasslands restoration effort.
